As an experienced law enforcement executive, I utilize my experiences and customized strategies to help other law enforcement professionals enhance their knowledge in specialized areas such as leadership.

I truly believe that teaching is a very important process of instilling concepts that will provide each individual learner with the necessary skills needed for a life-time. Furthermore, teaching is based on a belief that learning needs to be participant centered and that participants need to be equal partners in the learning process. As an instructor, one of my main objectives in teaching is to facilitate learning by helping participants to gain the necessary skills to take control of and become active participants in their own learning. I am a firm believer that knowledge gained through active participation is knowledge that learners will retain.

In my opinion, learners are entitled to quality instruction in an active and stimulating learning environment. Learners should experience frequent and repeated opportunities to act, react, and interact with each other and the instructor. I also believe that curriculum materials should be timely and relevant. Additionally, I believe that attainable standards of excellence should be used to facilitate optimal participant learning. Also, as teaching is a process, not an activity, my teaching philosophy offers an invaluable reflective view on how to strive for instructional improvement.

My experience as an instructor requires me to follow certain principles in teaching as follows:

- Being extremely excited and enthusiastic for each class;
- Learning about the learners in the course;
- Organizing each class well;
- Using a presentation style that maximizes student interest; and
- Using a variety of teaching methods to present the material.

I use humor in my presentations to spark participant interest and make my presentations engaging. I enjoy finding out about my participants so I can relate to them personally. In order to achieve the ultimate goal of participant learning, I strive to implement strategies that create a collaborative and safe atmosphere and encourage the application of knowledge to new situations. I believe that these strategies will help participants become ready and able to utilize their knowledge in their personal lives.
